Root to Bloom’s roots
In the summer of 2001, I planted seeds that grew into food. At the time I was living at a small, woman-run dog sledding and kayaking business in Northern Minnesota. I learned a lot that summer, among which was the discovery that I could grow food! Two years later I enrolled in a beginner farmer’s program at Michael Fields Agricultural Institute in Southeast Wisconsin. By helping to run the community supported agriculture (CSA) business at the institute, and by working with cooperative growers, I learned the ins and outs of organic and biodynamic farming. Throughout the season I also happily noticed how in tune I felt doing farm work. Alongside working with vegetables, fruits and animals, I harvested and arranged flowers for the Lincoln Park Farmer’s Market in Chicago, and for private events at the farm. Since earning my certificate of completion at Michael Fields in 2004, I’ve continued to work on organic farms and gardens in Southeast Wisconsin growing produce, flowers and herbs in conjunction with working other jobs like therapist, yoga instructor, dog-walker and substitute teacher.
Then, during the turbulent year of 2020, I lost my employment at a community art space and at a corporate garden due to the covid pandemic. Through a heartfelt struggle to find employment when everything was shutting down, I finally realized that for my well being, I needed to commit whole-heartedly to agriculture as a career. Soon after making this decision I accepted a job farming with Winterfell Acres in Brooklyn, WI who also graciously extended the offer of land and resources for me start my own flower CSA and business. And thus, Root to Bloom was born!
Beginning in 2025, I will be joining the fine folks and beautiful land at The Farley Center in Verona, WI. I am delighted to grow on this well-cared for land and transition to being a certified organic grower! I will offer subscription flower bouquets, alongside retail and wholesale options to the Madison community. I am excited to learn more about building healthy soil, growing gorgeous flowers and what it means to offer beauty in the world. This is how I best support myself, my family, and my community. I hope you will join me in celebrating the wonderful outcomes of welcoming fresh flowers into your life!
